I too find this kind of stuff offensive, but it is not new. Chain steak houses have been doing this kind of stuff since I was a kid, with happy cow logos, toys, puppets, etc.

Early religions made animals into gods who sacrificed themselves for the benefit of hungry cave people. Native Americans also had such beliefs in their religions.

Some anthropologists believe these kind of things stem from a semi-unconscious guilt people have about killing animals for food.

You know that's interesting. It seems to follow from the extent of this fiction we tell ourselves, that animals "enjoy giving us their bodies to consume."
